Congress Introduces Bill to Ban Federal Agencies From Using Facial Recognition

Via Vice

Last week, Ed Markey, Jeff Merkley, Pramila Jayapal and Ayanna Pressley introduced the “Facial Recognition and Biometric Technology Moratorium Act of 2020”.

The Act would forbid the Federal government from using facial recognition systems, with room for exceptions that must be passed an Act of Congress.

Importantly, it also states that any local or state government using facial recognition will also be ineligible for Byrne grants, which are Federal grants given to local police departments.

This is a significant bill, and should be passed pretty much as-is. While it could go further, it provides a good step to ending facial recognition. This is only happening as a result of the mass outcry of the Movement for Black Lives and the fight for privacy. Stay in the streets!
