Researchers find over 1,000 phrases that Siri, Cortana, Alexa & Google Home misunderstand

In all, researchers uncovered more than 1,000 word sequences—including those from Game of Thrones, Modern Family, House of Cards, and news broadcasts—that incorrectly trigger the devices.

This is one of the many reasons I will never have one of these devices in my home. The devices have to always be listening in order to hear the trigger phrase – something you say – like “Hey Siri”. Then, they record what you’ve said after it and send it to the manufacturer’s servers to process and return results.

In the past, some of these companies – including Apple – have been caught using humans to listen to the recordings, without letting users know. After much outrage, companies have either stopped doing this or offered opt-out settings.

This isn’t a theoretical question of danger, either. Amazon received and complied with a subpoena for a customer’s Alexa data in 2016.

If you have a computer or phone that has one of these “assistants,” be sure to turn it off.
