Google Maps is a creepy data collector + FB & IG get “vanishing” messages | Tech for the People Today – November 12, 2020

Google Maps is pretty creepy. We knew that, but Vice has a great article explaining six ways in which Maps collects your data and shares it with advertisers.

Vanishing messages have arrived in Facebook Messenger & Instagram. They’re end-to-end encrypted and will delete themselves “forever” once viewed. But they’re not a replacement for Signal: Remember that Facebook still tracks metadata, and Facebook’s systems aren’t audited by independent experts for issues.

The surveillance state is expanding its reach and using the COVID-19 crisis as the excuse. Wired reported on election day (so I’m just catching it today) that the Rio Rancho, NM school board spent $161,000 on forehead temperature scanners that come with face recognition built in – and they’ll be in use well after the pandemic is over.
