TikTok lives, for now – Despite the Trump administration’s best efforts to further demonize China and ban TikTok, the social video app will stay available in the US. On Thursday, the U.S. Department of Commerce announced that due to court proceedings that continue on, the forced sale of the company will not be enforced.

Despite their best efforts, sites like Facebook and Twitter simply can’t stop the spread of disinformation by censoring it, fully or partially. Those who believe it end up feeling that the networks are on the side of their enemy, and look to alternate apps. Parler, Gab and others have become more and more popular with “Stop the Steal” groups, the far-right and associated nastiness.

Students, teachers and workers who are staying home are being forced to install privacy-invading software on their devices. Educational institutions are using testing and study systems that do facial recognition, attention tracking and more. And that’s leading to real privacy concerns, plus discrimination against non-white people and neurodivergent people.
